Make it a Family Affair!

Sometimes convincing your children to eat what’s good for them can be a challenge—but it doesn’t have to be. With a little planning and creativity, showing them how to eat healthy foods can be a snap.

Here are some tips:

  • Mix it up! Take your child’s’ favorite meals and mix in some veggies. Sprinkle their macaroni and cheese with peas or chopped broccoli, or add some diced carrots into their spaghetti sauce. Berries are also a great addition to waffles or pancakes. Presto, they’re eating healthier!
  • Let’s play a game! Tell your child you’re going to eat delicious stuff “from A to Z.” Together, create a list of veggies and fruits using the alphabet and check them off as you try them. Keep track of what they liked most and why.
  • Snack attack! Kids fill up fast at mealtime then later ask for snacks. This is a great opportunity to offer healthy snacks of fruits and veggies instead of sweets. Smart snacking is key!
  • Be a copy cat! It’s important to be a good role model for good eating habits. So drink your milk and eat your vegetables, too. Kids love being like their parents—just watch what happens!
  • Create a daily ritual! Set a time for the whole family to sit together and enjoy a snack or milk. Make this part of a bedtime routine and discuss what your children learned each day. Soon everyone will look forward to this special family time.
  • Talk it up! When you bring something new to the table, talk about it with your child. Discuss its color, shape and texture. Ask them to guess what it might taste like. They’ll love being included. Another great tip—let them help you prepare it. Letting them be involved with the food helps them become more excited to try it and like it!
  • Grow a Garden! Your kids will love the reward of growing their own food. Not only will it encourage healthy eating, they will have a rewarding sense of accomplishment. Check with your local nursery for ideas on easy-to-grow fruits, nuts, berries or veggies. Short on space? Container gardens work great, too!
  • Count your Colors! Challenge your little ones to see how many different colors of food they can get on their plates. In general, the more colorful the plate the better! Go for greens, reds, yellows and oranges.
  • Kid’s Choice! Each time you make a trip to the grocery store let your children choose a new fruit or veggie to try. Mangoes, papayas, plantains, pomegranates and kiwi are a great start. Some exotics might be more difficult to find, like dragon fruit, Okinawan purple sweet potato, passion fruit and star fruit.
  • Dunk it! Make a fruit and veggie plate with strawberries, apples, pineapple chunks, cantaloupe, carrot sticks and celery, and turn your kids loose with our Poppy Seed or Classic Buttermilk Ranch Dressing. Kid heaven!
